Technology Integration at the Morven Campus
At Collingwood School, technology is integrated into all academic courses. Students can expect to use a variety of technologies to enhance and expand their learning experiences in the Middle School. Our teachers strongly believe that technology integration should be seamless, purposeful and engaging. We aim to produce students who are critical consumers of information and regular contributors of accurate and meaningful content to the Web.
What is Collingwood’s overarching technology goal?
We believe technology is a powerful and essential tool for enhancing student learning. Technology is infused into lessons, when appropriate and relevant. Our school’s technology plan is revisited and updated yearly. The school's academic departments, the librarians and technology faculty work together to support the school's mission and curricular goals.
How does Collingwood make decisions about technology purchases that impact student learning?
Our school’s technology committee makes all decisions that affect student learning in keeping with the school’s technology plan. The technology committee is comprised of the Head of Technology Integration, the Multimedia teacher and one teacher representative from each of the departments within the school. Technology is constantly evolving, so the technology committee always considers balancing the potential of emerging technologies with Collingwood School’s needs. In general, our technology is replaced on a three year cycle.
Does Collingwood provide my child with a laptop?
At Collingwood, we have a BYOD Policy. “BYOD” stands for Bring Your Own Device. Students are not required to have a device; however, they may bring one if they choose. In order to support learning, we allow students to bring their smartphones, iPads, tablets, laptop computers – any device of their choice. Students will be able to connect their device to the wireless network in order to access their files and the WWW. Allowing students to select a device of their choice enables them to manage their own learning and take ownership of their personal device.
Do you filter the internet?
We do not filter our internet access. Part of the school's mission is to teach responsible and ethical use of the internet. This involves teaching our students to make good choices and holding them accountable. Internet filters also can, and do, filter out educational content inadvertently and do not always block inappropriate sites. Filters often provide a false sense of security and may be easily bypassed by a technology-savvy student. For these reasons, we believe it is better to take the time to help our students understand how to make good choices when using the internet.
